FALL 2010 Class Registration
- August 9-11
Fun with Finger-plays, Rhymes & Songs (ages 3-6)
Fridays 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Class Cost: $10.00
In this "hands on" class, children will learn finger-plays, rhymes and songs and will have even more fun combining arts and crafts to make their stories and songs come to life!
Requirements: Additional parent assistance will be needed for children who require help during crafts.
Arts & Crafts (ages 3-6)
Fridays 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Class Cost: $15.00
Explore color by mixing different colors to make new ones! Learn how to draw various objects and figures, including people, animals, nature, etc. This class will also include some guided freelance drawing to encourage creativity and use of imagination. Various seasonal crafts will be incorporated.
Requirements: Ability to pay attention and follow lessons in a group. Clothes that can get paint and stains on them should be worn to this class.
I Like to Move It, Move It! (ages 3-6)
Fridays 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM Class Cost: $5.00
If you are in the age range of 3-6 and like to "move it, move it", this is the class to be in! Classes will consist primarily of learning choreography and/or stage movement for the fall musical, Alice In Wonderland, and, in addition, will include themed days (as time permits) to help kids let loose and have time for free expression.
Requirements: Although open to all children ages 3-6, this class is required for those children in that age range who would like to be in the fall musical. Ability to work in groups and follow instructions.
Astronomy for Kids (ages 6-8)
Fridays 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Class Cost: $15.00
The Solar System, the Sun, the Moon, planets, asteroids, comets and more! Consisting of both lecture-style presentations and hands-on experiments including arts and crafts, various topics in astronomy will be explored. Short scientific films about the Space Shuttle and Astronauts as well as discussion of frequently asked questions about travel in space will be included.
Requirements: Ability to pay attention and follow directions for simple experiments in class. Ability to work in groups and willing to do brief research on class topics with parents at home.
The FUNdamentals of Human Anatomy Applied (ages 6-8)
Fridays 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Class Cost: $15.00
Combine knowledge of the body with experiential movement as we explore the basics of human anatomy and apply it through yoga poses. This class will be part lecture, part hands-on, providing an opportunity for fun and learning.
Requirements: 1st grade reading level. Ability to work with partners and follow directions. Students will need to bring their own yoga mat and a yoga blanket or parents may order them from the teacher. (Yoga blocks and straps will be provided.)
Alice in Wonderland: The Musical (ages 7-14)
Fridays 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Class Cost: $35.00
Join Alice's madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! Roles are plentiful, with many wonderfully wacky characters. All those enrolled in this class are expected to participate fully regardless of size of role. Roles will be cast according to ability and the dynamics of the group. Remember, there are no small roles, only small actors! This fast-paced stage adaptation provides an opportunity for students to experience musical theatre in a variety of ways. Students will not only perform, but learn about the technical side of bringing a stage performance to life, including costume building, set design and more!
Requirements: Ability to take direction. Commitment to teamwork and working in groups. Motivation to rehearse outside of class (line memorization) and learn new skills including singing and dancing. No singing or stage experience required. Must attend additional rehearsal scheduled for Friday, December 17th and performance Saturday, December 18th.
U.S. Government for Kids (ages 8-11)
Fridays 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Class Cost: $10.00
The class will focus on the U.S. Government and its three branches, how the National government differs from State Government, the election process, and citizenship. Various historical documents and their significance in today's society will be discussed as well as how current events tie in with the past. Students will have required reading and a project due at the end of class (including a presentation). This class will be a combination of lecture and project work.
Requirements: 3rd grade reading level. Ability to work in groups settings.
Gizmos & Gadgets (ages 8-11)
Fridays 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Class Cost: $15.00
This interactive, creative craft class that will incorporate science facts, concepts and ideas. Fun science contraptions will be created with common items that are found in the house, garage and kitchen. Science contraption projects will demonstrate the understanding of science concepts and facts making it both a fun and educational experience.
Requirements: 2nd grade reading level. Ability to follow directions and work well in groups.
Victorian Literature & British Empire (ages 11-14)
Fridays 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM Class Cost: $40.00
Oliver Twist, Alice in Wonderland, Silas Marner, On Liberty, among other works of poetry, drama, and music are just some the British Literature that will be covered in this exciting class about the British Empire. These books, the issues they cover and the historical period in which they were written will be discussed. Venture into the geopolitical truths of the Victorian Period, enjoy lectures taken from the "Great Courses Victorian Britain" each week. Field trips such as going to a polo match, cricket match and high tea at the Adolphus are planned. A staged reading of “The Importance of Being Earnest” will take place in the spring as a continuation of this class.
Requirements: Interest in class discussion. Comfortable reading a text and willing to learn how to analyze it for social clues, historical perspective and character.
Private Piano Lessons (ages 4 - adult)
Fridays (times vary) Class Cost: $5.00
Have you or your child always wanted to learn to play the piano? Gail Arbetter, HSE’s on-site teacher, provides an excellent opportunity to learn in a warm, nurturing, and yet challenging setting. Each lesson is a private, one-to-one, experience. Ms. Gail provides a professional, experienced and kind approach that leaves students enthusiastically anticipating the next lesson and new pieces of music.
Students learn music fundamentals, theory and appreciation, while playing progressively more complex and interesting music. Lessons are fun and emphasize a love of music. Ms. Gail's approach increases the student's self-esteem, encourages creativity, and enhances skills including self-discipline, reading and math comprehension, problem-solving and fine motor coordination. Lessons are customized to match the ability and learning style of the individual student.
Learning is paced to meet the student's goals and available practice time. Students experience the success of producing beautiful music, always at their own rate of progress. Both children and adults are welcomed to take lessons.

Cost: Homeschooler Special Rate: $25 for 30 minutes, $40 for 45 minutes
New Students Only: $20 for 30 minutes or $35 for 45 minutes for the first semester only.
A minimum of 4 students is required in order for lessons to be offered on-site.
